The brief
The NHL faces a distinct generational challenge: despite its deep heritage, the sport struggles to capture and retain younger demographics in key American expansion markets. Traditional sports marketing heavily relies on game-day hype and linear broadcast loyalty—models that completely fail to engage a younger audience that consumes media through fragmented, narrative-driven digital touchpoints.
Our foundational research revealed that sports are fundamentally an engine for shared storytelling, and youth engagement is heavily tied to geographic and subcultural pride. The gap wasn’t the sport itself; it was a lack of localized narrative access points. We asked a critical question: How do we shift the NHL from a legacy sports product into an indispensable piece of a city’s identity?
We engineered “Welcome to Forever,” a highly targeted, multi-city campaign system built to bridge the gap between geographic pride and hockey culture.
Instead of deploying a generic, top-down league campaign, we architected a hyper-customized approach tailored to the unique pulse of specific cities, teams, and players. The creative system was anchored by “Never Forget Your First”—a sub-narrative celebrating the iconic, history-altering “firsts” that defined individual franchise mythologies. Built to live where young audiences naturally exist, the campaign utilized responsive digital storytelling, high-impact social content, and localized out-of-home experiential touchpoints to transform complex league history into snackable, emotionally resonant cultural milestones.
